For my review this time I got a retro horror film by Eben Mcgarr, House of the Wolfman.
Five strangers; athlete Reed Chapel and his twin sister aspiring scientist Mary Chapel along with expert antique authenticator Conrad Sullivan, great white hunter Archibald Whitlock, and woman of mystery Elmira Cray; are invited to the creepy castle of Doctor Bela Reinhardt (played by Lon Chaney’s grandson Ron Chaney) under the pretense that one of them would be made Reinhardt’s heir and inherit the castle along with all his scientific research. The all find out the share a common link, their mothers had been attacked, ravaged, disfigured, and left pregnant. Also, none of them knew who their real fathers are. Things get creepy as Whitlock along with his servants discover odd animal tracks outside the castle. They find they are being observed by some who is looking through holes in the eyes of the portraits in their rooms. Also, Elmira discovers an old gypsy lady in the tower room who claims to be Reinhardt’s mother and says that Reinhardt has secrets including the fact that his real name is Frankenstein. Soon Reinhardt reveals the horrifying true reason for bringing them together.
I found this a very amusing attempt at creating the final installment of Universal studio’s unfinished trilogy. The storyline is very authentic. The dialogue is nearly spot on, but feels a bit off. The acting could have been better. Though the actors tried to duplicate the acting style of the time they ended up being a bit over the top and almost comical. Though filmed in black and white the film has no graininess to it, which helps spoil the feel that this could have been made in the 40s. Also, the sound is too clean as well, it sounds way too modern. The filmmaker would have done well to add sound crackles, grain, and scratches to artificially age the film. Finally, the makeup work, though trying to pay homage to the classic Universal films, looks too modern and overly detailed. Having the monsters wear contact lenses took away from the 30s and 40s feel of the makeup. The Frankenstein’s monster makeup looked practically like the one used in the modern Universal Monster film, Van Helsing. Also, the Wolfman makeup could have been a rejected version made for the remake of The Wolfman rather than being anywhere near the classic makeup worn by Lon Chaney Jr.  Also, Dracula’s three female vampire companions at the end of the film looked way too modern and detailed, which was actually annoying to me. The only monster that comes off spot on is Count Dracula, who is actually played masterfully by Michael R.Thomas, though painfully short in duration.
All in all House of the Wolfman is a good try. If Eden Mcgarr and crew had simply tried to create a Universal style gothic film without trying to put their own spin on it, this film could have been the masterpiece it should have been. Remember, people, less is more.  If you are a fan of the classics you won’t cringe, but after watching this film you will be tempted to pull out your DVD collection of the classic Universal monster films and see the good stuff.

Review: Porn Shoot Massacre

For this month’s movie review I thought I’d enter the world of crossed genres with an amusing and tacky homage to both slasher and porno films, Corbin Timbrook’s Porn Shoot Massacre.
Misty, Sondra, Junie, Tina, S&M Queen Beretta, and Midget Tiny have all come together to do an epic porno film. The new hot director on the scene, Malfini, says that this film will have something for every porno fan’s taste. So the girls come to the set, which is in an old labyrinth like warehouse. When the girls get on set some of them are a bit suspicious of their director. His mustache and goatee look glued on and he wears dark glasses and a tacky hairpiece. Also, he seems oddly familiar. Still, Malfini is paying them three times what they’ve gotten for any porno film, so they play along. After all what could possibly happen? What Misty and the other actresses don’t know is their concerns are well founded. The truth is a masked killer is stalking the warehouse and what Malfini has forgotten to inform them is that he is not actually creating  a porno film, but a snuff film and Misty and her associates are the featured victims..
What I loved about this film is it combines the stereotypical, and amusingly tacky, aspects of both porno films and slasher films. The film is shot on low grade video with low grade lighting, and has the low grade music you get in most porno films. It also has the creative kills any gorehound will appreciate.
 The film starts out with a shower scene or opening actress Christy (Played by extremely busty Shelly Martinez), which is a stereotypical of both a porno and slasher films. Christy after having a tackily written scene chatting on her phone with her agent and bringing up the film shoot gets killed shortly after outside her home by the killer who is shown from either his chest down or his feet as he suffocates Christy by putting a plastic bag over her head and tightening it around her neck.
 The killer turns out to be a silent killing machine that looks like he made his mask out of a jock strap. He is very much a Jason-like killer that uses what he has at hand. He impales one girl with a knife through a wall into her back. He uses a very large hammer and beats the S&M girl, Beretta, in the stomach several times. Impressively, enough this film even has a final girl, which is one of the only two girls that don’t have sex scenes in the film.
 I have to applaud Timbrook’s casting of Robert Ambrose, who looks quite a bit like horror icon Robert Englund, as Malfini. While watching this film I could almost see Robert Englund in this part. Also, I laughed my ass off at Richard Little’s performance as Tiny. Richard also bares a striking resemblance to Jackass’ We Man.
All in all if you are a horror fan and are amused by tacky porno films, like myself  (Seriously, they can be funny as hell) you will love this film….Trust me…

Review: Abraham Lincoln VS Zombies

The production company The Asylum has gotten a bad reputation over the years with the horror community. After all they are the people who put out the horrid mockbusters that a person might grab by mistake or order by mistake via streaming. They are also are the people that pollute our horror movie viewing with tacky monster films like Sharktipus or Two Headed Shark Attack. But, every bad production company has the potential to create one truly good film among the masses of crap they produce. Such a film is the one I’m reviewing this time. That glowing jewel in The Asylum’s crap pile is Abraham Lincoln VS Zombies…
What? You say. But it’s just another of their damned mockbusters! Actually, no. This is not just one of their damned mockbusters. This is a well written and well acted film with incredible authentic locations.
This film tells the story of how while President Lincoln is laboring over the Gettysburg Address he finds out that a horror from his childhood has resurfaced and is threatening his war torn nation. A single survivor of a failed attempt to take a Confederate fort informs Lincoln, before succumbing to the zombie plague, that he and his men were attacked by hoards of enemy soldiers and civilians who proceeded to rip them apart and eat them. Fearing for the future of the nation President Lincoln along with a group of Federal agents, include his future assassin John Wilkes Booth, make their way deep into enemy territory in order to deal with the undead threat. Upon entering the fort and securing it Lincoln finds that there are only four Confederate soldiers alive, including, amusingly, General Stonewall Jackson and a soldier named Pat Garrett. Taking a few agents with him Lincoln heads to the nearby town to look for survivors. He finds after he and his men have to take shelter in the town’s bordello that only three prostitutes and a young boy named Teddy Roosevelt have survived. One of the prostitutes, Mary Owens (played by Baby Norman) is also the woman Abe Lincoln was once in love with. Now both Union agents and Confederate soldiers must work together to defeat the hoards of the undead before the zombie plague can spread.
This is an amazingly well done film for its modest budget of $150,000. It was shot on location in Savannah, Georgia, thus giving it a very authentic look.
The story by Karl T. Hirsch and J. Lauren Proctor, and screenplay by Richard Schenkman, wonderfully melds historical events with the fantasy situation.  They include Lincoln giving is legendary Gettysburg Address and even put in situations leading up to the President’s assassination at the hands of John Wilkes Booth.
The performances in this film are top notch.  Actor Don McGraw gives a wonderful performance as General Stonewall Jackson. Young actor Canon Kuipers proves his acting chops as Young Teddy Roosevelt. Jason Vail provides a quiet menace as Federal agent John Wilkinson aka John Wilkes Booth. But, it is Emmy Award winning actor Bill Oberst Jr’s stunning, and once in a lifetime, portrayal as President Abraham Lincoln that steals the show. Bill brings Lincoln to life and causes the viewer to feel honest emotion at the conclusion of this film.
Honestly, though I do await the big budget Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter film I doubt it will have the heart this film has. If you are a fan of films like Bubba Ho-Tep or Shadow of the Vampire, you need to add this film to your collection.

Review: Womb, aka Clone

Review: Womb, aka Clone

For my review this time I’ve got an art house Sci Fi film from filmmaker Benedek Fliegauf, Womb, also known as Clone.
This film tells the story of Rebecca (played by Eva Green, Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows) and her life long friend and love of her life Thomas (played by Matt Smith, the current Doctor Who). When Thomas is hit and killed by a car while parking along the side of the road so Rebecca could go take a pee, Rebecca out of guilt and the fact that she can’t live without Thomas decides to clone Thomas and uses her body to bring about Thomas’s rebirth. As the film progresses we see Thomas grow up thinking that Rebecca as his mother. We also see Rebecca’s torture as Thomas grows into a man and his interest turns to other woman. Things fall apart when the original Thomas’s mother shows up and sees the clone. She doesn’t say a work, but looks on to her dead son with pain and walks away. Now Rebecca has to face the fact that she has kept Thomas’s origins from him and now Thomas is asking some very uncomfortable questions.
This film mostly takes place in a muddy moor area with a single house on stilts in the middle of nowhere. The only high technology presented in this film is a couple of Apple laptops and a small creepy interactive robot dinosaur that Thomas and a friend ends up burying alive. Even Rebecca giving birth to Thomas isn’t even shown. Eva Green gives a very quiet and rather drab performance as Rebecca. Her performance is very subtle but is affective. The main problem I had with Matt Smith’s performance as Thomas was that it was pretty much his character from Doctor Who without the wardrobe and police box. There was only a couple of scenes where Smith actually showed a bit of anger but mostly he is just jabbery.
This film is definitely not for your common sci fi fan. Unless you are a fan of slow burning art house films that are bare bones seventy-five percent technology free and mostly character driven you will not enjoy this film at all.

For this month’s review I got an atmospheric ghost story, Ti West’s film The Innkeepers.
The Yankee Peddler Inn is literally on its last legs. In a matter of days it will be getting the wrecking ball. For Claire and Luke, the last two members of the staff, this is the perfect time for them to pull out their ghost hunting kits and have one final crack at capturing the Inn’s infamous ghost, Madeline O'Malley. After all they only have two sets of guests in the Inn to deal with and the run of the place, since the owner is in the Bahamas. But what Claire and Luke don’t realize is that while they are hunting the ghost the ghost is hunting them.
The best way to describe The Innkeepers is that it is the poor man’s The Shining. This film is not for the horror fan that can’t handle a slow burn film. This film is full of atmosphere, character development, and clever dialogue. There are a number of jump scares and creepy incidents, but this is far from the rollercoaster ride most horror films now a days seem to be. When the final payoff happens some viewers will be scratching their heads, but for those who manage to catch the clues you’ll find the wait worth it.
Actress Sara Paxton gives a fantastic performance as the plain Jan staff member/armature ghost hunter Claire. Equally, Pat Healy gives a wonderful performance as Claire’s mentor and ghost hunter Luke. Also part of the cast and putting in another outstanding performance is Kelly McGillis as the actress turned psychic Leanne Rease-Jones.
The Innkeepers is not the film for the average horror fan, but if you like your horror with a good psychological punch and good characterization this is the film for you.

On Friday the 13th screenwriter Victor Miller made a surprise visit to my internet radio show, The Eric Morse Project. During the show Victor presented my crew, The Wolf Pack and I a challenge. He asked us to go see the new film, The Cabin in the Woods, and review it both in print and on my show. So, loving a challenge, I went and saw the film the next day on Saturday….

The film starts out as most every modern horror film. We are introduced to five  college students who are going for the weekend at a cabin owned by a relative of one of them. We are also introduced to two research scientists who seem to enjoy their work. Something big is going on, an experiment that appear to be copied all over the world. It’s a competition it appears and they want to beat the Japanese. We learn later how this connects to our group of college kids.

Driving through the woods the kids drive up to a decrepit looking gas station that appears to be closed. In typical movie fashion look in the gas station and find the typical creepy guy running the place. The guy gives them the standard warning, but the kids ignore him and continue to the cabin. On the way they enter a tunnel and come out on the other side of a deep ravine. A bird flies across the ravine and is immediately roasted on an invisible energy wall in the ravine. What the hell was that, the viewer asks. Welcome to the real movie.

The Cabin in the Woods is both a statement on modern horror and an experiment unto itself. We find out that the research scientists are monitoring the college students. We also find out that they are manipulating these kids and through drugs and suggestion turning them into the stereotypical slasher film characters. One girl they made dumber through the blond hair dye she used. One of the guys is being made more macho and aggressive through the beer he’s drinking. This is all being noticed by the druggie of the group, who brought his own bong, that transforms into a thermal mug in moments. He seems to be fighting the control.

At one point after they are well settled in the cabin (so much so that the bleach blond gets oral with a wolf’s head on the wall), and amusingly without suspicion, a trapped door opens leading to the basement of the house. There the kids find an assortment of items, including a remotely familiar puzzle device, a music box with dancing ballerina, and most importantly a diary. The supposed virgin of the group (though she has just got done having a sexual relationship with her teacher..) starts reading from the diary, including the Latin passages on resurrecting the dead, thus releasing a horde of redneck sadomasochistic zombies loose to kill them.

Now that would be enough for one horror film, but Cabin in the Woods is special. We find out that the reason the scientist have played puppet masters and put these kids in this grizzly situation is because they need the blood and the deaths of five people of a certain sort appease the ancient gods who once ruled the world. If they don’t the old ones will rise and the human race will fall.

You would think that with all this going for it I’d be blown away by  this film…sorry. The problem with this film is the problem with most modern horror films, high concept, but lack of tension and uneven characterization. The problem is this film is actually two films in one, the main story and the background story. We end up getting to know the scientists better than we do the college kids, thus we end up lacking sympathy for the victims. Also, whenever there is a kill for some reason the filmmakers cut to the control room and the scientists and break the tension of the scenes.

Also screenwriter, Josh Wheaton, throws way too many references not only to his own works, but also to films like Hellraiser and Silent Hill. The final payoff is a chaos of blood and monster FX with a special cameo that really didn’t have the wow factor given everything that comes before.

As an experiment The Cabin in the Woods is interesting, but as a horror film it lacks tension and is shallow where it should be sympathetic. If you are a modern film geek you’ll love  the myriad of references, including the fact that the cabin itself  looked like the one in Evil Dead. Also, gore hounds will love the gore though it lacks the punch. So really in the end it will depend on the viewer as to what they do or do not get out of this film. Movie Review: Familiar

As a reviewer, I rarely do reviews on short films. I mean, after all, usually these films only get limited festival runs and rarely get put on DVD, except when they’re jammed in with a mix of other short films both good and bad, in compilation editions. But, when producer Zach Green contacted me on Facebook and asked me to check out his latest short film, Familiar, and do the review, I thought why not. I was pleasantly surprised.

Writer/director Richard Powell’s short film, Familiar, tells the story of John Dodd, who appears at first as a middle aged man who is going through a mid-life crisis and hates his family and his life. We get this idea because we hear a voiceover that from the start of the film says critical and negative observations about John’s life. Supposedly, John wants his freedom. Unfortunately, we find out that his wife, Charlotte, is pregnant. The voice, which we assume, is John’s thoughts convince John that his wife, who already has a teenaged daughter by him, is trying to further imprison him with this unborn child. We see John as he end the pregnancy by spiking his wife’s food with abortion drugs. After his wife loses the baby she suggests they try again. It is at this point that we find out that the voiceover isn’t John but something else. The voice tries to convince John to overdose his wife, but John refuses. But, what is this voice? Does John have a split personality?  Is it simply John’s negative side expressing its self? The truth we find is much more horrifying and leads to a very bloody ending.

This film is well written and well acted. John Nolan gives an excellent performance as John Dodd and as the voice of the other. The FX for the final reveal is top rate and definitely provides the payoff. If you like good characterization, an intriguing plot twist, and bloody gore you will not be disappointed.

Movie Review: All About Evil

I recently saw an amusing slasher film titled All About Evil. This film tells the story of Deborah Tennis, who is played masterfully by American Pie alumni Natasha Lyonne,. A rather mousey librarian inherits her father’s beloved, but failing movie theatre. In order to save the theatre, Deborah starts enticing gore hounds with a series of short films…but the horrifying the truth that the gore fans don’t realize is the murders presented in the films are real.  But when his girlfriend mysteriously disappears horror fan Steven starts getting suspicious and realizes the horrific truth.

This film reminds me of the early slasher films of the sixties and early 70s, like the films staring Vincent Price…Theatre of Horror and Doctor Phibes. Though this film does have gore scenes, its focus is on bringing you memorable characterizations and plot development. It also makes bold statements about modern horror films and the fans obsession with gore.

The cast is fantastic. I was thrill to see horror icon Cassandra Peterson in a role other than Elvira. Jack Donner gives a creepy performance as Deborah’s assistant, Mr. Twigs. Also, there are Deborah’s other murderous associates The twins, played disturbingly by Jade and Nikita Ramsey.

On a personal note, I loved the scene in the film where an Elissa Dowling look-a-like get her tits sliced off by a guillotine in a rather humorous gore scene.

If you are bored with the typical formula slasher film, then this is the film for you. I highly recommend it.

It’s said that third time is a charm and we hope this is the case in this instance….After two failed attempts at interviewing Mary Madcox, aka  Nurse Hatchet, the makeup FX wizardess from The Chainsaw Sally we figured we’d  do a simple, easy, email interview…

 

Horror Bob Blog: Howdy Mary, or would you rather we call you Nurse Hatchet?

 

Nurse Hatchet: Hola amigos, yes hehe I am known as Naughty Nurse Hatchet ;)

Some might also know me as Mixtress Mary DeSade..I have many nik-names hehe, they all root back to the many different productions or music projects ive been involved with.

mostly, let me try to explain.. I’m known as Mixtress Mary DeSade when credited for my Musick, soundtrax & bands ect..and I mostly know as Nurse Hatchet when credited on the films & productions I’ve worked on. But of course my favorite Wolf Pack can call me Mary.. or Nurse... Hehe but if you wanna know what I like to be called... You can call me MIXTRESS!! ;) TRIX for short hehe another nik-name ive been dubbed most recently lol. Now say... YES MIXTRESS hahahaha!!! ;-D

 

Horror Bob Blog: So, YES MIXTRESS...LOL, after a year’s wait, the second season of Chainsaw Sally is finally underway and being enjoyed by the fans. I bet you and the cast are thrilled..

 

 

Nurse Hatchet: Ohh yes indeed, its always a wild ride, been a lot of fun along the way, and to finally watch each f the episodes, it feels truly Wonderful im totally Excited, literally bouncing off the walls of my paddedroom hehehe! Everybody involved is very excited, this season has really come back hardcore!

 

 

Horror Bob Blog: So what can we expect from this season?

 

Nurse Hatchet: Well I can tell you this, you can expect the un-expected to happen this season, that’s a promise! This season is going to shake you up! , More Demented, More Erotic, More Blood, More Boobies, More Brutalicious!

This season will take you to a much DARKER place!

 Plus, there was a bigger budget for the gore and tech ect..

So you can absolutely expect to see much more in the GORE!

and of course the Killer soundtrack doesn’t hurt hehehe! ;-D

 

Horror Bob Blog: This season Sally has competition  in the person of another serial killer named Angel Eyes, who is played by JimmyO Burril. Tell us a little about this.

 

Nurse Hatchet: Ooohhhh ill tell you right now, Angel Eyes absolutely scares me, I don’t want to give anything away about this, but I will ay this I think JimmyO is Amazing as Angel Eyes, I think as the director he already knows exactly what he has in mind for this character, and he translates that so smoothly and it works, I’m not messing around, Angel Eyes has completely shaken things up in Sally’s little town of Porterville and it has me on the edge of my seat..and I friggin work on the show,, I’m still biting my nails on the edge of my seat lol. ;-D But that’s what I love about Really Good Horror, it actually scares you and takes you for a rollercoaster ride, some get sick & throw up, I am in it for the ride, I don’t get sick, im like a doctor eating my salad while watching an autopsy lol.

pass the popcorn and show me the GUTS, ..like I always say... NO GUTS NO GLORY!!!! ;)

 

Horror Bob Blog: So, this season it’s a battle of the sexes. Who you think we should put our bets on?

 

Nurse Hatchet: Hahaha is that a trick question... don’t ever bet against SALLY, as much as I do love Angel Eyes, Sally is my home girl hehe XOXOX

 

 

Horror Bob Blog: Also, Debbie Rochon is back as the psychic palm reader Blondie. I bet you’re excited about this?

 

Nurse Hatchet: Mmmmm yes indeeeeed She is.. Hehe well I’ll tell you right now, everybody involved and all the fans have been ecstatic over April & Debbie being back together again, our favorite GOOD SISTERS back together, it is something very special for all of us XOXOOX I worked on the GOOD SISTERS, in fact that was the first production I worked on for Forbidden Pictures, and believe me when I found out I was involved on a movie starring Debbie & April together, well let’s just say the thought was moistening, like a wet dream cum true hahaha pardon my lust hehehe. ;)   but I do absolutely lust for their scenes together, Oh and that reminds me, ill tell you something very special that means so much to me, Our Mixtress DemonatriX track:

SEDUCTION of the SIREN SONG is being featured for all of the Debbie / Blondie scenes at the Palm Reader shop! and you can expect some very sexxxy steaming hot scenes between April & Debbie, and with my musick set to their scenes ooohhh  hehe I cant even tell you how truly Sexollent & Devilicious I think that is hehe, I just about fainted when I first watched it hehe.  I mean we actually did most of the score music for the soundtrack, but that is one of my favs, being that it has become the Blondie score theme, set to some of the most erotic parts, it couldn’t have been more purrrrrrfect!

 

Horror Bob Blog: What can we expect from Blondie?

 

Nurse Hatchet: Well, we are talking about Debbie Rochon, you can expect Debbie Magick from the moment you see her you can feel the room get hotter and more dangerous hehe!!!

 

Horror Bob Blog: So what can fans expect from the special FX department this season?

 

Nurse Hatchet: Hehehe well like I said there was a bigger budget on the Gore FX this time around, so count on more brutaliciously creative psychotic insanity, with lots more blood, Mutilations, and severed private parts, oh speaking of severed privates with out giving anything away, there’s a particular scene featuring "Monique Dupree's Boobies"  or should I say Booby hehe well that’s one of the gore FX props I worked on, and oh it is just absolutely sick, maybe one of the most vicious scenes I’ve ever watched.

 

Horror Bob Blog: What was your favorite FX so far this season?

 

Nurse Hatchet: Haha well, my 2 favorite FX would be a Chainsaw Enema haha!!

& I have to go back to the Monique Dupree Booby, it is just one of those really sick scenes that scarred my brain. ;)

 

Horror Bob Blog: What is the FX budget for a typical Chainsaw Sally Season 2 episode?

 

Nurse Hatchet: Well, I only do additional gore FX props.

So I’m not really sure what the entire budget was on the FX, I only knew about my parts.

and honestly I take very little interest in the money side if the production, my mind stays focused on the creative side of things, thinking about money mostly just gives me a headache. lol.

 

Horror Bob Blog: Who were your major influences when it came to getting into makeup FX?

 

Nurse Hatchet: This is a question I was really looking forward to answering, especially after my last interview hehe, I’m glad to have a chance to really go into it, I had a number of major influences in gore FX. Starting with Tom Savini, he was my first inspiration, he is definitely the reason I got into doing make up & Gore! and the more I began to pay attention to the end credits of all my favorite horror films starting at about 10 years old, my favorites became Rob Bottin, Dick Smth, Rick Baker, John Carl Buechler, Screaming Mad George, Greg Nicotero, Howard Berger, Ray Harryhausen, Lon Chaney, oh the list goes on..

 

Horror Bob Blog: Another thing fans probably don’t know is that you and your band Mixtress Demonatrix are doing the music score for Season 2. Please tell the readers about this.

 

Nurse Hatchet: Yes indeeed, well actually there’s a pretty good chance all the Mixtress DemonatriX fans know that hehe, Infact my band has been topping the industrial music charts for over 2 years strait,  when I say 2 years strait, I don’t mean a few songs here & there, I mean every song we released went strait to number one..and stayed there until 'we" removed it to release a new song hahaha that is a fact. and that has something to do with how we started doing the music on the Sally show, I pointed out our numbers on the charts to JimmyO, and I think being a drummer and musician himself actually took notice of what me & my band were doing, and that is something very special, infact music is almost always the topic of conversation when I talk with JimmyO.. I was personally asked by Jimmy to work on all the major score themes for the show, and having my music along with a number of our DemonatriX trax being a part of the CHAINSAW SALLY universe is a dream come true for me!

Honestly, I was pushing for that because music comes first in my life before the gore FX, I was much more focused on the soundtrax & scoring this season then I was on the gore FX props, I mean I have love for both and that’s why ive spent most my life doing them but music has always come first, so while we began with Forbidden Pictures doing our Gore FX props, all along I was trying to push us towards the music side of it, and that’s because I truly always believed that my Musick & Forbidden Pictures were meant to compliment each-other like a tasty mixed drink that goes down smooooth hehe, or kinda like Tim Burton & Danny Elfman, but with a seriously Devilicious & Dirty Darkside!

Horror Bob Blog: Also, you have a CD out. Please tell us about this.

Nurse Hatchet: Aaahhh Yes!! the new album is titled: "Something Wicked This Way CUMS"! it's really a string of songs that tell a story if your paying attention, its all actually based on our upcumming comicbook story. So I cant give away to much details before we unleash the comic, but I will explain this as best possible. the album through each song tells a story of revenge, revenge achieved through seduction, sex, or any means necessary. Put it like this, something very bad happened to the Nurse, and there's gonna' be Hell to Pay!

Horror Bob Blog: What were your major influences in creating your music?

 

Nurse Hatchet: Ohh great question, I really have a wide variety of influences & inspiration in music. Mostly because I collect film soundtrax, which tend to offer a cool variety of music genres & styles on each soundtrack. I’ll start with my favorite soundtrack artists.. Stewart Copeland, Danny Elfman, Wendy Carlos, Alien Jourgensen, Angelo Badalamenti, Basil Poledouris, Ennio Morricone, Trent Reznor, David Bowie XOXO and lets see, my most infuential bands were... Nurse Hatchet: Yes indeed!!! ;-D We are re-creating a few of the songs from the original line-up by request of JimmyO,  and I happen to love Silver Scream so as you can imagine I am very very very excited about doing this!

 

Horror Bob Blog: Also, Nurse Hatchet has made it into the comic book world. Tell us about this.

 

 

Nurse Hatchet: hehehe that is correct, my first work on a comicbook was in Virus Comix, BLOKES TOMB OF HORROR #666. which featured a number of short horror stories, including a story by Lyndal Ferguson titled DR.BANG & THE NAUGHTY NURSE! I collaborated on the story for all of the "Nurse Hatchet" dialog parts. and Lyndal did the Artwork, Jason Crawley did the Lettering. I fell in love with this story, and the entire comic, it is full of so many excellent short horror stories, classic style similar to EC Comics! I loved this so much, that I demanded our comic-threesome come back together for the official Nurse Hatchet comic! which is in the worx right now, it has become a DemonatriX Double Feature comic! "Origin of NURSE HATCHET" & "Nurse Hatchet meats CHAINSAW SALLY" I don’t want to give anything away about the stories, but I will tell you this, its going to take you on a twisted tale of lust for revenge, and offer up a deviliciously tasty romantic encounter between the Nurse & Sally, along with a fun game of Hunting! ;)

 

Horror Bob Blog: What’s your favorite modern horror comic? I think I know what one the is…LOL

 

Nurse Hatchet: Hhmmm modern comic.. honestly my favs are mostly vintage, I own the complete collection of the 1970s run of WereWolf By Night. and I have a pretty decent collection of the original run of GhostRider. as for more modern comics, I really love horror comics mostly, especially based on horror films, or horror film characters, so I have the original run of the Army of Darkness,  Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Hellraiser, Pinhead, Leatherface, Jason goes to Hell, Jason vs Leatherface, PuppetMaster, Faust, HellBoy, Halloween, I have the original CREEPSHOW book, hehe oh theres so many to mention..I love super hero comics as well,  I’ve always been in love with the entire BATMAN universe, and all the Gotham characters, especially Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, Cat Woman & the Joker!! but honestly im not particular to comic brands, I love DC as much as I love MARVEL, or DARKHORSE ect ect ect.. Somemore of my favs are Spiderman, Superman, the Hulk, Kang the Conquerer, Dr.Doom, the Flash, Thor, Wolverine, this is gonna sound stupid because she wasn’t actually a real comic book character, but I really love FIRESTAR from the old Spiderman & his amazing friends cartoon hehe.oh there’s just too many to name, all such awesome characters & stories.

 

Horror Bob Blog: So tell us a little bit about who Nurse Hatchet is.

 

 

Nurse Hatchet: well, a lot of folks tend to assume I am a Nurse...hahaha hello folks..

I am a Psycho wearing a Nurses Uniform hahaha, get it. escaped from the hospital, well... you'll find out once you read the comicbook. 

  Oh, do you mean, tell you about me. lol..well actually that pretty much sums it up, I am crazy, legally diagnosed. hahaha. and somehow, I managed to work my insane ways into the independent music & film industry hehehe, which only makes sense because I wouldn’t fit in anwhere else, I mean, In reality im so shy I can barely talk to people. That’s not a joke, im sure it sounds funny, especially if you seen our musick videos lol.. but you see that’s me "in character" with out the mask & the uniform, im just a geeky skater chick lol.. cyber nerd lol.. that’s me. I break free completely of all my inhibitions & boundaries when I become the Nurse, that’s who the Nurse is, she is Mary MadCox Unleashed, she is what hides inside mi dark mind, all the sexual thoughts and fantasies, all the blood lust and revenge,  I had a pretty harsh childhood, and went through some pretty twisted stuff growing up. I joined the Navy at 17 years old to run away from home.

I was drugged at a party and raped, I don’t really want to go into details but it happened the first year away from home, so I started taking my weapons training very seriously, also took a few extra self defense classes, which all came into play, only a few months later I was attacked again, but this time I fought back and got away. that was scary enough, but then it happened again, I was chased and attacked, I fought my way free. all in a period of 2 years I was raped & then survived two more attemps on me after learning to defend myself. but my first attack, when I was raped, I guess this kinda f@#ked me up in the head, I suffer from very intense scary bad dreams, and heavy anxiety, a fear of people, oh the list goes on..lol but rather then going out and killing people..which I have thought of doing many times for the reasons of revenge lol..I learned to translate my emotions into my song lyrics & the comicbook storylines & a number of creative outlets I focus on, writing, painting, doing the gore fx props.. and I’m not ashamed or afraid to talk about what I’ve been through because I have the hope other women will read this and realize its not a perfect world out there, its not all innocent, bad things happen, and there are very bad people out there, so if I can inspire anything on this topic, it would be for women to learn how to defend yourselves, its so important to know how to fight back, don’t be a victim. be a survivor!

So now you see, the comic story is actually a bit more personal to me then most folks might realize. I focus my psychosis, the pain & darkness of the memories into the stories, & especially into my musick!  for me it’s really like some kind of ancient tribal therapy of the soul. lol much like self-madicating hahaha. "Bartender another round please" lol..

speaking of tribal beliefs, something else about the Mask I wear, see there are a number of different tribes all aroud the world, the strange thing is out of all these separate different tribes from different cultures, almost all believed in the thing called the Mask of Transformation. this was a mask either found or created by a person, which once they would wear the mask they would become the truth, hidden deep with in themselves, it could be of great strength & power, good or eveil, its really just what you are inside and completely amplified on high.

Well, now you know im crazy hahahaha.. hope this gave you a little taste of the Monster that lives in my brain.. LOL

Nurse Hatchet: oh I love'em all!!! I guess my favorite blend would be Erotic Horror Comedy.I mostly only get into independent horror. but there is once and a while a decent big budget horror film..rarely...lol

I have to say, people, that as much as I love horror I'm disgusted with the horror community....

I know what your reaction is going to be...What's up your ass now??? Here is the thing, it seems to me that people in the horror community have the attitude that if you don't go to a half dozen conventions a year and fill your Facebook profile with pics of you standing around with horror celebrities you are a nobody in this community. It doesn't matter if you made an impact in this genre or if you step up and help people without hesitation and give 120%. Unless you are a member of the elitist inner circle you don't mean a thing...

Oh fucking, God, you say, here he goes again. Yes I am. A couple days ago on the messageboard, From Dusk Till Con, I was informed that I'm nothing but a cheap fan fiction writer who runs a cheap public access podcast and that I'm being stupid to expect anyone to have me as a guest at their convention. Hell, for the past six months I've been practically begging podcast and horror magazines (including Fangoria) to interview me. I want to talk about my books, especially my web published book I put out for free for the fans, but all I hear is crickets and silence.

I have to say I hate hypocrisy. The majority of us horror fans have always been treated like trash by the outside world. When I was a kid I was literally beaten down by the kids in school because I was one of those horror/sci fi geeks. In one instance a group of kids laughed at me as they broke two of my fingers. Now, I've noticed the same arrogant us and them attitude among members of the horror community. It's like if you don't hang out with this group at conventions or you don't belong to these organizations you are trash. These people get the red carpet thrown out to them by convention organizers. They only have to ask to do podcasts and magazine articles. It's not that these people have made any bigger impact on the horror genre then say me or Victor Miller, it's just that they are part of this high school mentality social political crapfest that has contaminated our community. It makes people like Victor and I literally get treated like beggers with bowls when it comes to conventions or just trying to promote ourselves in this community. It doesn't matter that I wrote the first original novels based on a slasher franchise, or that Victor wrote the script that started the F13 franchise...we are not in their select social group, thus we are considered inferior.

This has royally gotten to me the last few months. Being shit on by Reyna Young for the only North California horror convention has just brought it to a head.

Last month I got so depressed that I nearly pulled a Dark Spider and walked away from the horror community and the social community in general. You can take only so many beat downs before it starts to take it's toll. But then I got mad and changed my mind. To fucking hell with these hypocritical jackasses. Why should I have to give up the thing I love and walk away to die. I have as much right to be able to do conventions and promote myself...screw them...I bellowed within.

So, here is the thing...why am I calling members of the horror community hypocrites??? Here is my answer we are a community of people who were treated like shit, beaten down, and called inferior by non-horror fans for our love of this genre...Why the fuck are we doing this shit to our own. What arrogance drives this crap??? The people copping this attitude should be ashamed.

My dear friend April and JimmyO Burril said in an interview the one thing they love about the horror community is that they help and support their own. I wish it was true.

I will say this, I have supported anyone who has come and asked me for help. If they wanted to promote their film, project, or event I would not only have them on my show, I'd post on Facebook and open threads on messageboards to help them. This is not going to change with me. This is who I am. It's just I wish my fellows in this community would do me that same respect back. It's like what John Rambo said in Rambo Part 2 when Troughtman said that John shouldn't hate America. John said, "Hate it? I'd die for it. I want what they want and any man who gave his all and spilt his guts for his country wants. For his country to love us as much as we love it...That's what I want..." Enough said...

This is Robert's wife Jennifer. I'm so sorry to tell you that Robert died January 12th. He started having chest pains and I called the ambulance. He died a little bit after he arrived at the hospital.
Robert didn't have a lot of friends. After he had to close the video store he was left pretty much alone, since most of the people he talked to were customers.
I know he would like me to tell all of you what a joy it was for him to come on here and chat with all of you. Thank you for making he last months happy.

I plan to post his last two interviews. Robert’s friend William Pattison is helping me, since I don’t know the computer very well.

When I went to surprise my new friend and my first interview on my blog, William Pattison, known to Friday the 13^th fans as Eric Morse, for lunch I didn’t realize it would be so inspiring and eye opening.

I arrived around eleven-thirty in the morning at the San Mateo County Assessor/Recorder Office, where William works as a foreclosure journalist, which means he sits in front of a county computer and types the information from the Notices of Trustee Sales and assessor information into his laptop to be used to create a newsletter for foreclosure investors. I asked a very nice lady at the front desk if she knew William. She immediately pointed at a row of small cubicles, each with a computer in them. William was on the opposite side from me. I could see his tan hat with the words “DOCUMENT JOURNALIST” in dark blue letters peeking up from behind the cubicle wall.

I went around the cubicle and tapped William on his shoulder and said hello. He looked up at me and I noticed he had earphones on. He took off his hat and pulled off his ear phones. I noticed he had a peach fuzz amount of white hair on his head, which he’d shaved it a couple weeks before. He asked if he could help me. I introduced myself and he was surprised. I guess he doesn’t get very many guests at the office. I invited him to go out to lunch, realizing he might not be able to take the time away from his work. He smiled and said it would be his pleasure; the only thing was he was limited in funds. I told him lunch was on me.

Before we left the office, William introduced me to the lady in the cubicle on the other side of him. The lady’s name was Amy and she is the publisher of the newsletter William does the research for. She was very nice and told us to have a good time.

As we were leaving the office asked William for a suggestion on where we could go. He initially suggested Subway; I told him we could do better than that. He suggested a sandwich shop he knew called Sandwich Spot. Funny enough it was near the Subway. We actually enter to restaurant from the back door. William said it was the way all the cool people went.

Upon entering the establishment there was a blare of rock and roll music. This sub shop must be extremely popular because it was loaded. There was a line that started nearly at the entrance. I suggested we go somewhere else, but William assured me that we wouldn’t be waiting too long. I was surprised to find he was right. Amazingly enough we ordered and paid for our food within ten minutes. We ended up sitting outside in a courtyard area. Though it was cold outside the sub shop had heating unites outside so it was fairly comfortable. Our sandwiches came rather quickly after. These were wonderful sandwiches. We both had the same thing, a sandwich called The Manwich. They had pastrami, roast beef, turkey, and salami.

As we ate we talked horror. William has a wonderful knowledge of classic horror. We talked about Universal horror films and Hammer. We even chatted briefly about an old Amegus film we both enjoyed but has become a lost treasure, The Asphyx.

It was around this time that an event happened that totally changed the flavor of our luncheon.

A woman and her mother entered the sandwich shop. The woman who had at one time been very attractive now had a scar across her face. William immediately recognized her. He excused himself and went over to her. I followed close behind because I knew something was up.

William greeted the woman and asked her if she was all right. The woman looked at him quizzically and asked if she knew him. He informed her that he was the one who saved her life. She looked at him surprised and then she hugged him. I was amazed.

William explained to me that a few weeks ago he had been out to get food for him and his sister when he had come upon the woman, whose name we found out was Guadalupe, and her husband fighting. Her husband pulled a razor blade knife and slashed her face with it. William interceded and had to hit Guadalupe’s husband in the head with a garbage can to stop his attack on her. Guadalupe had run away from the scene and her husband had also fled in the opposite direction. According to Guadalupe she ran to her mother’s house. Her mother rushed her to the emergency and the police were informed. With tears in her eyes, Guadalupe informed us that she had just been to her doctor and that he had informed her that she was going to have a permanent scar across her face.

According to Guadalupe her husband attacked her because he thought she had been out with another man. In fact she had been at her mother’s house. According to Guadalupe her husband is now in custody and is awaiting trial for attempted murder.

William gave her one of his business cards and told her if she needed him to testify he’d be more than happy to. Guadalupe’s mother, Mrs. Gonzales, was in tears the whole time William and her daughter were relaying the story to me. Mrs. Gonzales also prayed and asked the Virgin Mary to bless William for what he did for her daughter.

After, William offered Guadalupe and her mother lunch. Guadalupe told him he’d done enough for her, but he insisted. I was completely amazed.

After we said our goodbyes to Guadalupe and her mother I escorted William back to the recorder’s office. On the way, we talked. I asked him why he insisted on buying the ladies lunch. He said that he just felt he had to. I reminded him that he had said he was limited on funds. He told me he realized that, but he still had to do it. I asked him why. He said because that is just who he is, like risking his life for a complete stranger. He told me his co-workers, who had been away from the office when I came, would call him completely nuts. He said they’d have compared this situation to him helping a lady he’d become close to at a coffee bar he had frequented. The lady in that situation had ended up playing him and backstabbing him. William’s co-workers had rubbed his nose in it and told him that he deserved what he had gotten Though William did indeed regretted what he did for that woman, he even got a tattoo to remind him of the situation, he knew he really couldn’t have done anything different. When I asked why, he said once again that that was just who he is.

After leaving William at the recorder’s office I was excited to get home and write about this experience. I realized I had been privileged to see a part of William Pattison few people have seen and even fewer have understood. I understand and I feel honored to be able to know him.

Now, with that said, I have to say that I originally planned to interview actress Michelle Shields next in order to get her side of why she ended her friendship with William. After spending this time with William along with reading what Michelle Shields wrote on her profile, and in her posts on that picture from Days of the Dead, I have decided I won’t do that. I will not give that woman another opportunity to make excuses and lie at William’s expense. It would be an insult to the wonderful things this man has done. The way Michelle Shields paints William Pattison is a far cry from who he truly is. William is not a degenerate or a woman hating sadist. He is also not sick or delusional, nor is he a liar.

If anything it is clear to me that it is Michelle Shields who is an egotistical opportunist who manipulates and lies to aggrandize herself at others expense. In my 70 years I’ve known a number of actresses, Betty Davis and Loren Bacall, just to name a couple, and I have to say Michelle Shields is an insult to the name of actress. The actresses I’ve know have something this spoiled, self absorbed, poser doesn’t, that is class.

William is a hero and deserves better than lies and insults. This incident was not the first. William has helped, and even saved, the lives of a number of people. That rotten bitch Michelle Shields should be ashamed of herself. She has the nerve to parade around costumed up as a hero, yet she bashes the real thing. That totally disgusts me. My wife, Jennifer, who is standing beside me as I write these words, agrees with me.

Before I said my goodbyes to William he told me something very comforting. He said that there are real costumed crime fighters, like Batman or Green Hornet, out in the world. He said he knows one of them, and is in contact with others. He said that there are people who do risk their lives to protect people and ask for nothing in return. That is truly a comforting thought.
