Review: Into the Abyss (2022)

Review: Into the Abyss (2022)

His time I have a dark lovecraftian-like post apocalyptic film from Argentina…

They came from the sky, bringing with them an eternal night. Then there came the flood that would change humanity forever. Bannon is trapped in the middle of an isolated city, which is perpetually covered by a black and rainy sky, and which epitomizes the end and decay of the old world. Seeking to leave this condemned area, he will realize that his very existence drags the vestiges of that world and they must be put to the test or perish in the abyss.

Thought this was an excellent psychical/survival film, though I hated the ending because you weren’t sure what is going on.

A lot of people complained about how slow and drawn out this film was, but I was really understanding because most foreign films have that feel to them. People in Europe have more patience than American audiences. I was happy that I found a copy with an American dub on it because it would have been draining to try to keep put with subtitles.

I really liked Bannon and Dave. I thought the actors and the voice actors did an excellent job.

I found the story interesting, except for the last 20 minutes and loved the atmosphere whole they were in the city. Outside the city was a bit too bright. It was a harsh transition.

I really enjoyed the creature FX, as limited as they were. The soldier aliens were some good makeup FX and were lit well enough to make the creepy and disturbing. The huge leviathan aliens had a real Lovecraftian feel to them. I actually wished we’d gotten to see more of them, but I gather the lack was due to budget.

All in all I was very pleased, but I can honestly say this film is not for most Americans horror/SciFi movie goers. I’m  more cultured than your average movie goers and I doubt this film could keep an average viewers interest long enough to finish them film especially if they had to watch the Argentinian language version. Also, the ending will put them off. So, with that said I cannot recommend this film unless you speak Argentinian and like odd endings.
