Review: It Follows

By William Pattison, aka Eric Morse
For Horror Bob's Blog

Hey, Howlies. I just finished watching It Follows and I have to say I was impressed. The film tells the story of a girl named Jay who what seemed like an innocent encounter with a boy on a date; that is until the boy knocks her out and ties her to a chair. He informs her that he has passed onto to her a thing…no not a sexually transmitted disease, but some type of demon that slowly walks toward its victims and kills them in a horrible way. This demon can present itself a family, friends, or pretty much anybody. The only way to get rid of this thing, at least for a while until it kills again is to have sex with somebody and pass the demon on to them. Jay at one point in the film passes it on to her friend Glen, who looks amusingly like a young Johnny Depp. But only partially believes her and the demon gets to him. So, now Jay and her remaining friends must find a way to put an end to the demon before it kills Jay.
I absolutely loved It Follows. This film reminded me of the good old scarefests I used to watch in the 80’s…I mean the real 80s horror films, not the idealized dribble this generation thinks an 8os style horror film is supposed to be. This film had everything in the right proportions. It had tension, well drawn characters (not regurgitated Breakfast Club characters), and honest scares rather that puddles and blood and gore and endless jump scares. Even the music in this film, which is mostly done with a synthesizer has that wonderful 80s feel to it that is so missed these days. I have to say bravo to director/writer David Robert Mitchell. He knows how to do some honest horror and hopefully he continues to deliver this quality of work. He has the potential to be the next Wes Craven. I whole heartedly recommend this film to any true horror fans.

Review: Strange Blood

By William Pattison, aka Eric Morse
For Horror Bob’s Blog

I just finished watching an excellent independent horror/science fiction film titled Strange Blood. This film is about an obsessed scientist that is trying to find a cure for all disease. In his attempt to do that he accidentally becomes a vampire. This is a royally freaky film and the biological incubator he creates is something to be seen. This is a very Cronenbergue take on the vampire and I highly recommend it.

Review: Chasing Ghosts

By William Pattison, aka Eric Morse
For Horror Bob's Blog

I just finished watching a wonderful film titled Chasing Ghosts. No it is not a horror movie or a paranormal drama. It tells the story of a young boy who is grieving over the death of his older brother. He is obsessed with death and as a hobby films funerals and posts them on YouTube. During one of his filming sessions he sees a misty figure behind the widow. Not really thinking about it he posts it and moves on. The next day he finds he has had thousands of YouTube hits. He becomes an unlikely celebrity. His father thinks of this as a way to make money. Then the kid meets a man who had died and had been brought back and an incredible friendship is started.
This is a wonderful film and explores the subjects of life, death, grief, and moving on. It is a film I highly recommend to people who are tired of the para-dramas and scary CGI monster ghost stories…

Review: Forgotten Tales

Review: Forgotten Tales
By William Pattison, aka Eric Morse
For Horror Bob's Blog

I just finished watching Reyna Young’s new film Forgotten Tales.
I have to say I was very impressed. Reyna has constructed an anthology film in the vein of Creepshow. I loved the fact that all the stories in this film were inter-connected. I also like the fact that Reyna made these character centered stories rather than gore centered. Don’t get me wrong, there is enough violence and mayhem to satisfy any horror fan. The thing I like was that Reyna, rather than going heavily for blood and innards, went more for story and playing with the viewers psyche with camera and startle techniques. Most lower budget horror films don’t do this. They shove a bunch of gore down the viewer’s throats and give them very little else. This film I highly recommend and I give 8 out of  10 howls…..

William Pattison/Eric Morse’s Top Ten of Horror List of films I saw in 2014

William Pattison/Eric Morse’s Top Ten of Horror List of films I saw in 2014

Well, with every Tom, Dick, and Dummy putting up best of 2014 lists, I thought I would put up one of my own. After all in many ways I’m way more qualified to do this than a lot of these kids and horror nasties out there. At least I’ve studies every era of horror, unlike others who are stuck in the 80s. Now some of these are not from 2014 but it was this year I saw them. So if you have issue with this, stuff it…. So here we go starting with number 10….

10. The Barbadook
I have to say this film had plenty of atmosphere. Though it was made in Australia it has the feel of a Spanish film like those of  Guillermo del Toro. Also to this film’s advantage is it has the most annoying child performance of the year. It was brilliantly acted by the boy in question, because by the end of the film you wanted the kid to die horribly. On top of that you have those lovely tramatic moments where you remember the fear of your closet or what is under your bed…Awesome…

9. The Dead 2: India
This is the sequel to another favorite zombie film The Dead. This film takes place in India and you have new characters and a new army of the dead to our poor main character to fight through to get to his pregnant girlfriend. Shit it’s zombies and it’s good.

8. Djinn
This is a film that very few people got a chance to see but should have because it is awesome. If you love films like Night Watch and Day Watch you will love this film. God created three races…The Angels made of light, humans which are made of earth, and a third race made of fire known as the Djinn. In every generation of humans there is one man can keep the balance and keep the Djinn at bay.  Well written and well executed.

7. Odd Thomas
This is a fantastic adaptation of the first novel in Dean R Koontz’s popular supernatural series.

6. You’re Next
I know people are going to scream “That film came out in 2011!” I say fuck you. I saw this film in 2014. This is a superior slasher film that is full of plot twists. Nothing better than that…

5. Starry Eyes
Nothing I love better than films about Faustian deals. In this film the leading lady makes such a deal for fame and fortune…Good shit. Also this film has humor, depth, scares, and heart. As I say again….Good shit….

4. Inflicted
This is an incredibly well done film. Wonderful use of POV aka  found footage. An original take on a vampire. Finally good characterization. Good shit indeed.

3.The Taking of Deborah Logan
This is a fantastic possession film that explores the idea of mental illness as well. As well it takes advantage of the POV/ found footage style.

2. Big Bad Wolves
This film from Israel sports excellent character work, a very disturbing plot about a child murderer, as well as plenty of gritty gore….

1. Tusk
My number is of course Kevin Smith’s trek into body modification horror. This film is fantastic because it combines disturbing horror, with amusing characters, and of course Smith’s ever present commentary on society. For me this is truly the best of the best for this year….

See No Evil 2 Review

See No Evil 2 Review
By William Pattison, aka Eric Morse
For Horror Bob's Blog

See No Evil 2 is complete and utter crapfest. There are couple of fair kills, but it's pretty much just a Friday the 13th clone set in the County Morgue, aka the beginning of part 4 but way overly expanded and boring. Kane doesn’t even really play Jacob Goodnight, it is more like a carbon copy Kane Hodder Jason. Danielle Harris appears to be nicely toned and has had her eyebrow fixed, but still gives a performance like she is only half there. Katherine Isabelle looks like a fucking budging eyed freak case in the film and spends most of her time dry humping guys including Kane. Damn, Katherine did you down twenty Monsters to put in that performance? This film has no nudity so for horny guys it will be a bore and disappointed. Apart from the gore set pieces, this could be a PG-13 film, it is that tepid. It all goes on far too long, and the padded ending is utterly stupid. Kane becomes immortal after being pumped full of embalming fluid. Wow ladies that is genius….NOT! Give me a fucking break. No tension, no scares, no atmosphere, nothing a GOOD horror film should have. Typical bullshit low grade sequel to a WWE movie nobody ever liked in the first place. So to put it mildly another waste of money and time by Vince McMahon and made by a bunch of ego case no talent horror socials. Jen and Sylvia do yourselves and horror a favor and go back to doing grindhouse and action flicks. You make Uwe Boll look talented. Like this review, girls? It is heartily deserved. You’ve earned it. It’s sent because you know I love you so much!

WWE CRUSTERFUCK!!!!

By William Pattison, aka Eric Morse
For Horror Bob's Blog

Oh, my fucking god, I just saw the trailers for Leprechaun Origin and See No Evil 2. Vince McMahon, you are a fucking idiot and I’m glad your fucking empire is crumbling around you. You and your crew at WWE know nothing about good horror and you hire idiots and hacks. My fucking god! Leprechaun Origin is supposed to be the origin story  for the iconic character that Warwick Davis made popular. The fans wanted that beloved character and what the fuck do you give them, Golem. That’s what came to mind when I saw that piece of crap. I was actually looking forward to this film, but now I’m going to avoid like the fucking plague.
Oh, and don’t get me started with the Soskas’ clusterfuck, See No Evil 2. For months I’ve been saying that this film is going to be total crap, after all it is taking Vince and crew a year to try and fix this fucked up piece of shit. The trailer showed that I was right in spades. This film looks horrid. Danielle Harris looks like she’s on drugs in the trailer. The Soskas because they are so up Katherine Isabelle’s ass tried to give her an “original” look. What came out was a screwy looking mess. Isabelle has a overly long neck and buggie eyes. The girls put her hair up which only intensifies these weaknesses in her attractiveness. Also the lighting and color work in the film sucks balls. It is too dark, much like their error in American Mary. Also it is very muddy looking. This doesn’t add creepyness it just makes the shots muddy. Finally, this is Kane. What the fuck did you do to him? You can’t even recognize the fucker with all the hardware and stuff stuck to his face. The fans of the original film wanted to see Kane, but any bulky fucker could have played the part and you wouldn’t know the difference. Bad move, ladies. No wonder Vince’s crew has been busting their asses trying to fix this disaster.
Sorry, Vince, you’ve wasted $30,000,000 more on your on fucking turds made by hacks. If this is how you run your businesses it is no wonder wrestler are planning to walk out and you are loose money by the bus loads….But this is just my option….
